Connecting Your POS (Square or Clover)

Business · Setup

This is the step that turns on real transaction data: receipts, loyalty, insights, and reporting all depend on your point-of-sale (POS) system being connected. It only needs to be done once per store.

Before you start

You'll need to be signed in as the store owner — only the owner can view or edit these settings, and for good reason: getting them wrong stops new transactions from loading until it's fixed. You'll also need two things from your POS provider's own dashboard: your Merchant ID and an API Token (Square additionally needs an Access Token — see below).

Step 1: Find your credentials in Square or Clover

If you use Square:

  1. Sign in to your Square Dashboard at squareup.com/dashboard.
  2. Go to Account & Settings → Business → Locations to find the Location ID for the store you're connecting — this is what Scroll calls the Merchant ID.
  3. Go to the Square Developer Dashboard and open (or create) an application for your account. Under Credentials, generate a Personal Access Token (or OAuth access token) — this is your Square Access Token. If you have multiple Square locations, Square gives you the same access token for all of them — but you'll still enter it separately into each store in Scroll (see the note at the end of Getting Started about connecting more than one store).

If you use Clover:

  1. Sign in to your Clover Dashboard at clover.com/dashboard.
  2. Your Merchant ID (MID) is shown under Account & Setup → Business Information for the merchant you're connecting.
  3. Go to Setup → API Tokens and generate a new token — this is your API Token. Clover's API Token is specific to that one merchant/location.

If you can't find either of these in your POS dashboard, that's a question for Square or Clover support — but if you're stuck figuring out which value goes where in Scroll, email support@scroll.space and we'll help.

Step 2: Enter them in Scroll

  1. In the business portal, go to Profile (left sidebar) → Platform Configuration tab.
  2. Select Edit POS Credentials. You'll see a warning explaining that changing these settings changes where your transaction data comes from — select Yes, edit credentials to continue.
  3. Fill in:
    • POS Type — Clover or Square
    • Merchant ID — from Step 1
    • API Token — from Step 1
    • Square Access Token — only shown when POS Type is Square
  4. Select Save Platform Config.

Leaving a field blank keeps whatever was there before, so you can update just one value (say, a rotated API Token) without re-entering everything else.

Once saved, the page shows when it was last changed and by whom — useful if a teammate also has owner access and you want to confirm who touched it last.

Step 3: Load your transaction history

Once POS credentials are saved, go to your Transactions tab. If this store has no transactions yet, you'll see a Load Transactions card:

  1. Pick a From and To date range for the history you want to pull in.
  2. Select Load Transactions.

This is a one-time backfill for existing history. After the first load, the Transactions tab shows two buttons going forward:

  • Load Latest — pulls in anything new since your last load. Transactions don't sync in the background on their own, so click this whenever you want your latest sales reflected (for example, before checking your Insights, or right after fixing a credential problem).
  • Load Range — backfills a specific date range later, if you need older history you didn't originally pull in. Already-loaded transactions are skipped automatically, so it's safe to overlap dates.

Troubleshooting

If loading transactions fails, the error message tells you exactly what's missing, for example:

  • "Platform configuration incomplete. Set POS Type, Merchant ID, and API Token in your Profile." — one of those three fields is empty; go back to Step 2.
  • "Connect Square and set this location's Square Location ID before loading." — for Square, double check both the Location ID (Merchant ID) and the Access Token are entered.

If everything looks correctly entered and it's still not working, email support@scroll.space with your business name and the error message.
